Product Description
Kamwangi is one of two washing stations operated by the New Ngariama Cooperative Society in Kirinyaga, a region on the slopes of Mount Kenya known for producing some of the world's most exceptional coffees. Established in 1983, Kamwangi cultivates SL28 and SL34, alongside smaller amounts of Batian and Ruiru 11—varietals that we celebrate for their depth and complexity since we started buying coffee from them back in 2013.
In Kenya, Cooperative Societies oversee one or more wet mills—known locally as factories—where smallholder farmers deliver their coffee cherries. A well-run factory, like those under Tekangu Society (Tegu, Karogoto, Ngunguru), can return over 85% of sales earnings to farmers after milling and marketing costs. At delivery, cherries are hand-sorted before being gravity-fed into disc pulpers, where water separates the densest beans—P1 grade—destined for fermentation. Dry-fermented in concrete tanks for 18–24 hours, the parchment coffee is then washed, density-graded, and soaked for up to 24 hours. Finally, it dries on raised beds for 12–20 days, developing the clarity and complexity that define Kenyan coffee.
